Naz “The Trap Pianist”
Born in Atlanta’s once infamous East Lake neighborhood, which at one time was called “Little Vietnam”. Naz was exposed to life’s ills at an early age. In the late 80s and early 90s crime and drugs ravaged Atlanta’s southeast section.
However, there was a beacon of light, his parents. His father had a knack for business and a passion for music and his mother urged him to use his musical talents in their church. His father’s entrepreneurial endeavors generated enough funds to move his family out of East Atlanta to the suburbs of Lithonia, Ga. This gave Naz an opportunity to focus on his natural gift of playing the piano and drums, which led to his first job playing the drums at church at the early age of 9 years old. Naz inherited his entrepreneurial spirit due to the stern guidance of his father which taught him the importance of a dollar and that he had to “learn to earn” it for himself. At the age of 11, Naz honed in on his piano playing skills so he could take advantage of an opportunity to make more money by playing the piano for the children’s choir at church, and thus the piano became his “Trap”,
With the growing Atlanta Hip Hop culture and artists like Outkast, Goodie Mob, SoSo Def and others, Naz was inspired to pursue a career in music.
For many years, Naz worked tirelessly on perfecting his craft, trying to get his music heard. Trap music was growing strong, producing pioneer rappers like: TI, Gucci Mane, Jeezy, and many others,Naz fell hard for the Trap Movement. He took a night time job as a valet, parking cars at the local Atlanta’s Gentleman’s Club (strip Club) to position himself to meet some of the well known rappers that would frequently visit the establishment on Monday nights.
During the process, Naz developed his own unique sound and started his own rap group that included 3 High School friends and himself, called Kountry Midst; and later a 8 man rap and r&b collective under his first record label Red Klay Entertainment. The groups, along with the artist of the label have all enjoyed both local and national successes in the music business.
Later, one of the group members became VP of Marketing & Promotions for multi-platinum Def Jam recording artist , Young Jeezy and his label Corporate Thugz Entertainment. Naz was introduced to the label’s CEO and was instantly signed to a production deal upon hearing what Naz had to offer. Thus was the beginning of Naz’ professional career.
Now armed with his unique sound, talent and the support of Young Jeezy and CTE’s unparalleled street movement, Naz was poised for an amazing career.
Naz’ production career takes off with 4 placements on Young Jeezy Presents…USDA: Cold Summer Album, including the second single entitled “Corporate Thuggin”. This album went on to sale over 500,000 units. Naz expanded his reach and continued to play and produce for several well knowns in the industry. His next big production placement was on Florida Rapper Ace Hood’s debut album: Gutta. “Gun’s High” which is the song he produced was co written by legendary artist/songwriters R.City. This song ended up giving him his first musical placement in cinema as well. This song was featured in the 2009 film, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
With a career of abrupt success, comes attention and money but along with it came a life of excessive partying, drinking, health issues, divorce and disappointments.
What could have been destruction for Naz, instead turns into a life of new beginnings.
After taking a break from the lime light of the music scene, Naz begin to take on local piano gigs to start the recovery process; working through depression, sleep apnea and rebuilding of self. This eventually lead to him meeting legendary music artist T Pain which opened up an opportunity for Naz to work in the background of the business as a pianist/keyboadist, doing shows and studio work. No matter what, it seems Naz comes back with what he knows….entrepreneurship and music.
